Yet another twist has played-out in the highly anticipated deal with Starwood Hotels & Resorts $HOT and Angbang Insurance Co. Angbag is walking away, handing off the deal to Marriott International Inc– which is a big win for $MAR, a brand that holds reign over 4,087 properties and 697,000 rooms (as of July 2014). The foreseeable concern is how Marriott will steamroll Starwood’s Luxury Collections into their less-than-stellar Autobiography lineup. What kind of culture-clash can be expected with the young-money consumer who flocks to the W Hotels brand and the more traditional values ethos of Marriott International?
Also of concern is whether the DOJ will react positively to the the new conglomerates possible monopoly in hotel rooms in 5 of the 6 largest cities in the U.S.
